Balancing Act

The entire neighbourhood we stay in on vacation in south west Florida is a bird sanctuary.  Towards the back of this neighbourhood is a drainage pond where many species of birds and reptiles spend their days, including Sandhill Cranes.

Last year we were privileged to witness two parents raise a pair of chicks.  It seems this year they are back to their safe haven once again, but there is only one chick this time around.

With adults standing between 3-5 feet tall the chicks also are quite large, standing 20 inches or taller.   These big balls of fluff are fun to watch as they follow their parent's every move, learn from their behavior, and like all kids take little breaks from all their 'hard work', just like this one is doing here.  Soon we hope to witness them learn to fly as did last years chicks as they graduated to young adults!
